Water & the common cold, a cure for everyone?

Water & the common cold, a cure for everyone?

How water can affect the common cold

One of the best ways to fight the common cold is to prevent it from taking over your body in the first place. Prevention starts by washing your hand frequently to kill bacteria that may be hosting colds or flu, taking vitamins and avoiding people that have the flu and colds. One of the easiest ways to prevent colds and flu is ignored the most as it’s as simple as keeping yourself hydrated! Fluids play a very important part in your body, acting as a great defence against colds since fluids flush out toxins and impurities, whilst also aiding the production of mucus. Your body goes into overdrive when it fights off flu and colds and uses a lot more water than it normally would, which can leave your body incredibly dehydrated.

mains-fed-water-coolers-londonWithout fluids, your body has nothing to flush toxins out of your system with, which means you are more prone to getting sick. Not only this but leaving your body dehydrated for too long can result in headaches, migraines and even high fever. Drinking water is vital to staying healthy and maintaining the function of every organ in your body, including your heart, brain, and muscles. This is why it’s advised you drink more water than normal if you feel like you’re getting ill, as you want to give your body the best chance to help fight off budding infections. If you feel a sore throat coming, then hot water can be a great help since the heat can help sooth your throat as well as aid in decongestion.

Colds can be seen as our body’s way of detoxifying during the changing of seasons, as our bodies will attempt to harmonise with the seasons. Natural medicine states that our bodies will condense waste and purge excess mucus and congestion from tissue, improving circulation in the body. This process can take its toll on the body, which can result in flu-like symptoms. Drinking more water will aid the body in detoxifying itself. If you find yourself with a bad cough, drinking the proper amount of water can help keep the mucus in your lungs thin, which helps whilst you are actually coughing. Water also helps to loosen phlegm as well as just soothing an irritated throat.

Did you know that your lungs are made up of 85% water?

As strange as it might sound, your body actually needs water to breath. For your lungs to take in oxygen and purge carbon dioxide, they must be continually moistened with water. On average, your body uses between half to a litre of water per day just by breathing, so you can imagine how much water is being used when you think about all of the functions of a human body.
