The importance of hydration - Water keeping us healthy

Often people underestimate the importance of drinking large amounts of water throughout the day! People complain of dizziness and tiredness but fail to realise there may be one simple solution, drink more water - But, what is the optimum amount of water to do drink and how does water keep us healthy? This post will outline the importance of hydration and why you should meet your recommended amount.

What is the importance of hydration?

As mentioned above it is often overlooked by most people but remaining hydrated throughout the day can have a big effect on our health. Water does a variety of key things for our bodies, it helps to regulate the temperature within our bodies and also provides transport for nutrients through the body. Many people who drink less water than the recommended amount often complain of three main things, tiredness, dizziness and in some cases can even result in people having muscle cramps. Another key thing that water can do is help reduce the chance of any muscle cramps occurring through lubrication of joints.

What exactly does hydration mean though? Hydration can briefly be described as a process in which something is able to absorb water. Our bodies depend on water in order to survive for example every tissue, cell and organ in our body needs water in order to function properly and at an optimum level.

What is your recommended daily amount of water?

Now that we have looked into the importance of hydration and what exactly hydration is how do we maintain a solid level of hydration and what actually is the recommended daily amount of water? According to most major health authorities there is a general rule of thumb which is called the 8x8 rule. This means that it is recommended we drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day - this translates into roughly 2 litres of water or half a gallon to drink throughout the course of the day. It is important to note that this is only a recommended amount and that the exact amount may differ from person to person.

The institute of medicine added that the amount of water recommended actually differs depending on whether you or male or female. The average amount for a healthy adult male should actually be drinking on average 3.3 litres of water per day and for women around 2.2 litres of water per day - the general advice regarding the eight 8 ounce glasses is not supported by hard evidence but is a good guide and easy to remember how much water you should drink. So to answer the question what is the daily recommended amount of water eight 8 ounce glasses is a good guidance figure and should be the minimum amount you drink

Why does water keep us healthy?

As mentioned above water is the main chemical component that is needed to support a variety of body functions and maintenance. When reaching the recommended amount of water your body will run optimally and healthy enforcing the importance for hydration. Health problems start to arise when we fail to drink enough water - the main healthy problem is dehydration which causes bodily fatigue and drains your energy
